Your Teacher

¡Hola! My name is Elena and I come from Seville, the capital of Andalusia, in the south of Spain.

I am a qualified teacher with a Certificate in teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language from International House and I also have a degree in Dramatic Arts and studies in English Literature and Linguistics.

I love studying languages and learning new aspects of different cultures, and I hope I can help you in getting to know those of Spain. I always try to create a comfortable and creative atmosphere in class, where everyone feels confident and is eager to participate.

I am so glad to become a member of the ¡Vamos! team and I hope you will enjoy my lessons as much as I will.

About Us

We're a little different from other language schools. Our roots lie in the Spanish further education sector and here at Holborn our students have as much fun learning as we have teaching. That’s why our courses are so effective and why our students say our lessons are rewarding and so much fun.

More about this course

In this course we learn about Hispanic culture through the study of cinema.

Each lesson is dedicated to an Hispanic film. Students have a guide of questions to consider (films are first viewed at home) and then in class we watch a clip and discuss and debate topics shown.

Films we see during this 5-week course:

  • Los Renglones Torcidos de Dios (2022): Private investigator Alice checks into a psychiatric hospital feigning paranoia to collect evidence for a case she’s working on: the death of an inmate under ambiguous circumstances. The reality she faces in her confinement exceeds her expectations and casts doubt on her own sanity.
  • Competencia Oficial (2021): In search of significance and social prestige, a billionaire businessman decides to make a film to leave his mark. To do so, he hires the best: a stellar team formed by famous filmmaker Lola Cuevas and two renowned actors, both enormously talented, but with even bigger egos: Félix Rivero (Antonio Banderas) and Ivan Torres (Oscar Martínez). They are both legends, but not exactly best friends.
  • Las Leyes de la Frontera (2021): Introverted Girona student Nacho meets two delinquents from the city’s Chinatown and gets caught up in a summer onslaught of burglaries and hold ups that will change his life.
  • La Trinchera Infinita (2019): 1936 and a country taken over by fascism. A husband marked for execution and a wife determined to do anything to save him. An endless incarceration in his own home
  • Durante la Tormenta (2018): A mysterious interference between two time periods causes a worrying butterfly effect. As a result of this event, Vera, a happily married mother, has the opportunity to save the life of a boy who lived in her house 25 years prior.
